eBay Inc Opportunity Hack was created by a cross-functional team at eBay with an idea of bringing together volunteer participants, including employees, with nonprofit organizations to create positive impact.

This year the 36-hour hackathon will take place at PayPal Chennai office, on October 11 & 12, beginning at 08:00 am on October 11th.

During the hackathon, participants will work together with non-profit representatives to help implement technology solutions to some of their real, day-to-day challenges. 

We invite you to apply to have a project included in the event as a non-profit or volunteer to build a generic tool/app or participate as a hacker to support one of the submitted ideas.

Eligibility

No Purchase Necessary.  The eBay Inc. Opportunity Hack (“O-Hack” or “Competition”) is open to individuals who are (A) legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia (“US”) who are 18 years of age and older and who are physically located and reside in the US and (B) legal residents of the Republic of India who are 18 years of age or older (“Eligible Participants”). Void in Puerto Rico and where prohibited. O-Hack is subject to all US federal, state and local laws. O-Hack is also subject to the local laws of the Republic of India.

Requirements

1. All members of the team must be registered on ChallengePost and should be added to the project submission.

2. Links to GitHub, and video or presentation must be included in project submission.

3. At least two members of the team have to be present in person for demo to the judges.
 

Keynote Speaker

We are delighted to have Professor Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala as the Keynote Speaker.

Dr. Jhunjhunwala is an Institute Professor at IIT Madras. He received his B.Tech degree from IIT, Kanpur, and his MS and Ph.D degrees from the University of Maine. From 1979 to 1981, he was with Washington State University and has been at IIT Madras ever-since, where he leads the Telecommunications and Computer Networks group (TeNeT). The group works with industry in the development of telecom, banking, IT and Power Systems (including solar) technologies relevant to India, and has a special focus on rural technologies. It has incubated more than seventy companies in the last twenty years. He chairs IITM Incubation cell, Health Technology Innovation Center (HTIC), co-chairs Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) at IIT Madras and is professor in-charge of IITM Research Park. He also chairs a MHRD committee called “Quality Enhancement of Engineering Education (QEEE)” focused on 500 Indian engineering colleges, other than IITs and NITs.

Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala has been awarded Padma Shri in the year 2002. He has been  awarded  Shanti  Swarup  Bhatnagar  Award in 1998, Dr.Vikram Sarabhai Research  Award  for  the  year  1997,  Millennium  Medal at Indian Science Congress  in  the  year 2000 and H. K. Firodia for "Excellence in Science & Technology"  for the year 2002, Shri Om Prakash Bhasin Foundation Award for Science  &  Technology  for  the  year 2004, Awarded Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary  Lecture  Award  by  INSA  for  the year 2006, IBM Innovation and Leadership Forum Award by IBM for the year 2006, awarded Bernard Low Humanitarian Award in 2009, awarded “Bharat Asmita Vigyaan –Tantragyaan  Shresththa  Award”  for  the best use of Science & Technology through  Innovation in 2010,  and awarded Honorary Doctorates by  the Institute of Blekinge Institute of Technology,  Sweden in 2008 and University of Maine, USA in 2010. In 2010, he was also awarded JC Bose Fellowship in 2010 by DST, Government of India, awarded Dronacharya (2011) by TiE and recently awarded Top Innovator of Top 11 in 2011 Innovators Challenge. He is a Fellow of World Wireless Research forum, IEEE and Indian academies including INAE, IAS, INSA and NAS.

Dr.  Jhunjhunwala is a Director in the Board of Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited, Polaris, Sasken, Tejas, Tata Communications, Exicom,Mahindra Reva Electrical Vehicles Pvt Ltd and Intellect Design Arena Limited. He is also a board member of several educational institutes and section 25 companies including BIRAC. He was member of Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Committee from 2004-14.

  • Scope
    How big an impact will your solution have on the community? Scale of the problem being solved, Potential reach & Productivity gains - 10 points
  • Presentation/Demo
    In order to be successful you need to be able to demonstrate and market your solution so that it can succeed long term. Do you have a working demo? Do you have an elevator pitch for your target audience? - 10 points
  • Innovation
    Displaying innovative solutions to the problems - Do you solve the problem in a novel way? Can you create a solution that is cohesive across different areas or technologies? - 10 points
  • Accessible by the Target User Base
    It’s crucial that the target user base actually has access to the technology in question Can you articulate the capabilities and limitations of your user base? Does your product fit within those capabilities or work around them? - 10 points.
  • Implementable
    The projects need to be able to move from 'proof-of-concept' to working project- Is your architecture and technology extendable by others? Can the project be tuned to meet different or changing needs? - 10 points.
  • Open Source Software
    Open source solutions allow for a wider variety of contributors to be able to improve, extend and build upon. Does your project leverage open source software or libraries? Is your project in github? - 10 points
  • Cover all Categories
    All teams must get at least one point in all the above categories. Getting a 0 in any one category will mean they are not eligible to win.
